New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary hopeful Eugene Boakye Antwi says the party must strengthen its internal structures to prevent presidents and ministers elected on its ticket from becoming more powerful than the party itself.
According to him, the NPP must restore a system where the national leadership of the party is respected by the government and remains capable of engaging the president and ministers on behalf of the party.
He argued that winning political power should not mean the party loses its influence once its presidential candidate becomes President.
“The national executives must be respected by the flag bearer and the president,” he said on Good Afternoon Ghana on Metro TV on Tuesday, September 1.
Boakye Antwi explained that the party is the institution that gives birth to the government, making it important for the relationship between the two to remain balanced.
“The party gives birth to government,” he said.
He believes the NPP’s experience in government exposed weaknesses in this relationship, contributing to a situation where the party’s structures became too weak to effectively connect the government with its grassroots.
He noted that strengthening the party is therefore not simply about preparing for internal elections but about rebuilding an organisation capable of supporting and holding its own government together.
He said the NPP must also create stronger channels through which constituency and polling station executives can communicate directly with the national secretariat.
His proposal includes an organisational audit beginning from the polling station level, a clean and digitised membership register and a direct communication system linking the national leadership to grassroots executives.
Mr Boakye Antwi said the objective is to build a party that remains active and accountable even when it is in government.

Boakye Antwi is seeking to become the NPP’s General Secretary in the October 3, 2026 national executive elections, with a campaign centred on rebuilding the party’s structures, strengthening grassroots engagement and preparing the party to return to power in 2028.
He has pledged to unite the party and help it win a parliamentary majority while supporting Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to become President in 2028.
