The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set January 31, 2026, as the date to elect its next presidential candidate ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The announcement follows a decision by the party’s National Council to adopt a proposal from its Constitution Review Committee, aimed at streamlining internal processes and strengthening party structures.
Speaking to the press, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua explained that the date is final and does not require further endorsement by the National Delegates Conference.
“The date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the day we elect our flagbearer. A planning committee has also been formed to oversee the process,” he said.
The committee will operate as part of broader constitutional amendments and reforms expected to shape the party’s future. A nine-member team led by former Bekwai MP Joseph Osei Owusu and supported by National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye has been tasked to plan the National Delegates Conference in July 2025.
The 2025 conference will provide a platform to discuss and ratify key reform proposals meant to deepen the party’s democratic credentials and improve internal electoral procedures.
As Ghana’s political landscape steadily warms up ahead of the next election cycle, this move by the NPP marks an early and strategic step in defining its leadership direction.
