The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing to challenge aspects of the government’s position on proposed constitutional reforms, with the party set to present its own position on the recommendations.
Manhyia South Member of Parliament and a member of Parliament’s Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, disclosed that the NPP has completed its position paper on the proposed constitutional amendments.
According to him, the document has been submitted to the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for approval.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah said the NPP believes it is important to clearly state its position on the proposed constitutional reforms, particularly because the government’s current proposals may not fully reflect the views the party submitted during consultations by the Constitution Review Committee.
He explained that the committee undertook extensive consultations with political parties, government officials and other key stakeholders before producing its recommendations.
“It is more important that we come out with a position paper because, if you recall, in the run-up to the committee putting together its report, it did extensive consultations.
“It consulted the NDC, it consulted the NPP, it consulted the government, it consulted major stakeholders, including sitting presidents, past presidents, and so on and so forth, before coming out with their position paper.”
He said the NPP would therefore not leave the process entirely to the government.
The Manhyia South MP said the NPP intends to communicate its position to its supporters and the wider Ghanaian public.
He stressed that party members across the country need to understand the NPP’s views on the proposed reforms.
“Our supporters across the length and breadth of the Republic of Ghana must know the position of our party, and we are going to canvass vigorously, vigorously,” he said.
