The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised alarms over what it calls an alarming rise in politically motivated arrests of its members, accusing the current government of taking actions that undermine democracy and the rule of law. In a press conference held on Wednesday, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong strongly criticized the government’s handling of recent arrests, stating that the actions were “arbitrary” and lacked proper legal foundation.
Frimpong’s remarks come amid growing concerns that the government is using legal institutions to target opposition party members in a bid to stifle dissent. He stressed that such actions set a dangerous precedent that could erode public trust in Ghana’s justice system.
He argued that the government was intentionally targeting NPP members to silence their voices and intimidate the party’s base. “This is not just about one individual or one case,” Frimpong noted. “It’s a growing pattern, a systematic attempt to erode our democratic freedoms.”
The General Secretary also cautioned that if these actions continued, they could severely damage the democratic fabric of Ghana, with the potential for long-term harm to political stability and the rule of law.
“The tables will turn.” He argued that should the NPP return to power, they would not hesitate to take similar action against members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) if the current trend of politically-motivated arrests persists. “We are not calling for vengeance,” he emphasized. “We are asking for fairness, for the rule of law to be respected, and for the liberties of all Ghanaians to be upheld.”
Frimpong expressed concern that the government’s disregard for constitutional principles could set a dangerous precedent. He noted that such behavior undermines the pillars of democracy, including freedom of expression, the right to liberty, and access to fair legal processes.
“The NPP stands for justice and democracy,” Frimpong concluded. “We hope that the government will reconsider its approach. We don’t want to see these kinds of actions repeated. However, we must be clear that any political system built on injustice will eventually crumble. The tables will turn, and those who once wielded power unjustly may find themselves on the receiving end of similar actions.”
