NPP’s Afia Akoto sues A-Plus for defamation

A businesswoman and former Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Alberta Afia Akoto, has sued Kwame A-Plus, a musician and political activist, for defamation.

According to a writ filed at the High Court (General Jurisdiction), Accra, Afia Akoto is seeking damages of GHS 5,000,000.00 (Five Million Ghana Cedis) for defamation, including exemplary and punitive damages.

The plaintiff alleges that A-Plus made defamatory statements about her on his Facebook page, which were republished by various media outlets.

“Afia Akoto states that the allegations made by A-Plus are pure fabrications and contain no iota of truth,” the writ filed by her lawyers state.

The plaintiff is seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining A-Plus from further publishing or causing to be published the said or similar words defamatory of her.

Afia Akoto is also seeking an order directed at A-Plus to retract the foul statements about her contained in the Facebook publications of 12th July 2024, together with an apology to her, in the medium and with the same prominence.

The defendant has eight days to enter an appearance or risk judgment being given in his absence.
