NPP’s Awal Mohammed calls OSP incompetent over Ayawaso East vote buying probe

A member of the New Patriotic Party Communication Team, Awal Mohammed, has accused the Office of the Special Prosecutor of incompetence over its handling of vote buying allegations involving National Democratic Congress figure Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed during the Ayawaso East primaries.

Speaking on Metro TV’s GMG programme on Thursday, February 12, Mohammed Awal did not hold back in his criticism of the Special Prosecutor. He said the office had failed to act decisively despite what he described as clear evidence circulating in the public domain.

“OSP is incompetent, he needs to be replaced,” Mohammed said during the discussion.

The controversy stems from claims that Baba Jamal distributed television sets and other items to voters ahead of the closely contested Ayawaso East primaries. Videos that surfaced last week showed the items being shared, sparking public outrage and renewed concerns about vote buying.

For many residents who followed the tense contest, the images raised questions about the fairness of the electoral process. Civil society groups and political observers called for a swift and transparent investigation to protect the integrity of the ballot.

Mohammed Awal argued that the perceived delay in the investigation undermines public confidence in the country’s anti corruption framework and weakens trust in electoral institutions. He insisted that the circulating videos clearly show what transpired, yet claimed the Special Prosecutor has failed to acknowledge the seriousness of the issue.

“There are videos circulating and you can clearly see what happened, but the OSP refuses to accept that there was an issue,” he said.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor has not publicly commented on the matter. However, sources indicate that investigations into the allegations are ongoing.
