NPP’s vindictive politics may destroy Ghana’s democracy – Gyampo

A senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Ransford Gyampo, has expressed concern over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) alleged vindictive politics, which he believes threatens Ghana’s national cohesion and peace.

He said the party whose slogan is “Development in Freedom” is threading on a dangerous path.

“Ideally, the NDC, given its revolutionary past, should have been more vicious, vindictive and ruthless in dealing with political opponents… But Prof Mills pulled the breaks,” Dr. Gyampo stated in a Facebook post.

He referenced the recent revelation by Richard Jakpa, a witness in the trial of Ato Forson, that the Attorney-General and President Akufo-Addo are mounting pressure to jail the former Deputy Minister of Finance.

“The vicious scheme to jail Ato Forson at all cost by the NPP… should be worrying to all well-meaning Ghanaians who cherish our cohesion and peace,” Dr. Gyampo noted.

Dr. Gyampo condemned the NPP’s actions, stating that they undermine public confidence in the judicial process.

“If truly, someone deserves to be punished, so should it be. But if Jakpa successfully adduce evidence to back his claims, the NPP would succeed in being the worst offenders in decimating public confidence in our court and judicial processes,” he warned.

While urging the NDC to refrain from retaliating, Dr. Gyampo cautioned the NPP that their actions have consequences and may lead to a breakdown in national cohesion.

“The revolutionary fervor of the NDC was only suspended during the reign of Prof Mills, just for the purposes of safeguarding our peace as a nation… It is disappointing to note that these things are happening under a regime that we all thought knew better,” he stated.
