Amid reports that Nsoatreman FC has written to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) requesting to withdraw from the Premier League, the club faces charges related to breaches of Sections 16 of the GFA Disciplinary Code, 2019, and Article 42(6) of the GFA Premier League Regulations, 2019.
These charges stem from incidents during their Matchday 19 Ghana Premier League encounter with Asante Kotoko at Nana Konamansah Park on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
The 1-0 victory for Nsoatreman was overshadowed by violent outbreaks and lawlessness, resulting in one death, multiple injuries, and significant property damage.
Allegations include the club’s failure to control its supporters, who threw missiles onto the pitch, invaded the field, assaulted an Asante Kotoko player, attacked members of the GFA’s media partner, and damaged both the away team’s and media partner’s property.
Additionally, Nsoatreman is accused of obstructing a GFA-authorized media partner from filming the match.
In a separate development, both Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko have been charged under Article 34(6)(d) of the GFA Premier League Regulations, 2019, and Section 16(1)(e) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, 2019.
The charge relates to the failure to control players, which led to a brawl and conduct deemed misconduct, damaging the reputation of the game.
Both clubs have until Wednesday, February 5, 2025, to respond to the charges.
In response to the violence, the GFA has taken swift action. Nana Konamansah Park has been indefinitely suspended from hosting future matches, and Matchweek 20 fixtures have been postponed.
The GFA has also scheduled an emergency meeting with Premier League clubs, stakeholders, and supporters’ groups to address the incident and discuss measures to prevent future violence.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor has been appointed to head an inquiry into the events surrounding the match to ensure accountability for all involved.
Additionally, the Bono Regional Police have arrested Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the owner and financial backer of Nsoatreman FC, following the violent clash, which led to the tragic death of an Asante Kotoko fan.
