NSS suspends Ashanti Regional Director for hurling insults at a nurse

The Management of the National Service Scheme (NSS) on Thursday suspended the Ashanti Regional Director, Mr. Alex Opoku Mensah for verbally assaulting a nurse at the Manhyia Government Hospital.

The decision which takes immediate effect is to give ample time for further investigation into the incident.

A letter signed by the Ag. Director, Corporate Affairs, Ambrose Entsiwah Jnr, said the decision was taken after an “emergency meeting the Management of the Scheme held with Mr. Alex Opoku Mensah.”

“A committee comprising representatives from the National Service Scheme, the Public Services Commission, and the Ministry of Education, has been set up to investigate the matter and to submit its report to the NSS Management within one month.”

Mr. Opoku Mensah is expected to appear before the Committee on Monday, December 5, 2022.

Background

Alex Opoku-Mensah reportedly verbally assaulted a nurse at the Manhyia Hospital because of how the medical professional interacted with his daughter, who works as a doctor there.

The house officer’s prescription wasn’t available at the pharmacy, so the nurse called to offer a different medication.

The house officer reportedly objected because of how the nurse spoke to her, according to the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Hussein.

When the house officer called the nurse on the phone, Dr. Hussein said that she happened to be with her father.

As a result, Mr. Opoku-Mensah was furious about the situation and went with his daughter to the hospital.

“You are very frustrated…Who born dog?…you envy her, and you don’t respect. Are you a doctor? Who are you? Are you mad? Is the hospital yours? Stupid idiot.. that your useless nursing that you do, useless woman… Do you know who I am? I am the Regional Director of the National Service Scheme. Some of you are under me,” Mr. Opoku-Mensah said in a viral audio.
