Security forces in Nkwanta in the Oti Region have intercepted 1,000 rounds of ammunition during two separate intelligence-led operations, with two men arrested to assist investigations.
The Ghana Police Service said the first operation took place during a night patrol at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta on Saturday.
Officers stopped a 66-seater MGI bus with registration number AS 248-P, which was carrying passengers, and conducted a search of the vehicle.
Police said they discovered 750 live J/G cartridges hidden in a black polythene bag containing three brown boxes. Each box reportedly contained 250 rounds of ammunition.
According to the police, a 53-year-old driver’s mate, Hudu Mahama, admitted during preliminary questioning that the ammunition belonged to him.
In a separate operation later the same day, a joint Police and Military team pursued a motorbike rider suspected of carrying ammunition.
During the chase, a box reportedly fell from the motorbike. Security officers recovered 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges, bringing the total number of rounds seized in the second operation to 250.
The rider escaped with another box, and police said efforts were ongoing to trace him and recover the remaining items.
Following preliminary investigations, officers arrested 57-year-old Christian Kwasi Alonise in connection with the recovered ammunition.
Police said both suspects remain in custody and are assisting with investigations, while the ammunition has been retained as evidence.
The joint security team said it remained committed to maintaining peace and security in the area.
