Obuasi violence: AngloGold Ashanti schools closed temporarily over security concerns

The AngloGold Ashanti School in Obuasi has announced a temporary closure due to a “very concerning security situation” in the town.

The school in a statement signed by its Executive Director Simon Peter K. Attah-Cato, said the decision was made to “safeguard lives and property, and to promote the safety and welfare of our students, staff, parents, and all stakeholders”.

The statement cited incidents of burning of vehicles belonging to private entities and individuals, as well as damage to private properties, as the reason for the closure.

“In order to safeguard lives and property…the AngloGold Ashanti Schools will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025, and Tuesday, January 21, 2025,” the statement read.

The school hopes to reopen on Wednesday, January 23, 2025, “allowing us to return to our normal routine once calm has returned to the town”.

The management apologized for any inconvenience the decision may cause parents and guardians, saying “we count on your understanding and cooperation”.

The temporary closure comes after reports of clashes between small-scale miners and military personnel in Obuasi, resulting in the deaths of eight people and the burning of four vehicles.
