Ghanaâs justice system ushers in a new era today as President John Dramani Mahama formally swears in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice. The ceremony, set for this afternoon and streaming live across all Metro TV digital platforms, follows Parliamentâs strong approval of his nomination last week.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnieâhighly regarded for his judicial depth and more than 30 years of serviceâwas nominated on September 23, 2025. President Mahama commended his âwealth of experience and long serviceâ across the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court. He has served as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, following the suspension and eventual dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
During his vetting on November 10, he delivered confident, forward-looking responses, committing to an open-door, bipartisan leadership. He highlighted priorities such as strengthening judicial independence, improving public trust, and expanding access to justice for citizens nationwide.
Parliament confirmed his appointment on November 13, voting 163 in favour and 69 against, clearing the final path for todayâs swearing-in and the beginning of his full leadership of the Judiciary.
