The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Burkina Faso that claimed the lives of innocent Ghanaian tomato traders and left several others injured.
Describing the incident as both tragic and preventable, the Ranking Member on Trade, Industry and Tourism said he is deeply appalled by what he termed a grave failure of leadership and foresight.
According to him, the attack highlights what he calls the glaring incompetence of the Government of Ghana under the John Dramani Mahama administration in safeguarding citizens engaged in vital cross-border trade.
He questioned how authorities failed to anticipate the dangers posed by Burkina Faso’s long-standing jihadist insurgency despite access to intelligence and diplomatic channels.
The MP criticized the lack of timely travel advisories, enhanced border patrols, and coordinated evacuation measures for traders who regularly ply the volatile route.
He further lamented the absence of proactive diplomatic engagement with Burkinabé authorities and contingency planning by the National Security Council.
Hon. Baafi is demanding an immediate parliamentary inquiry into the matter, compensation for affected families, and a comprehensive review of Ghana’s regional security protocols, insisting that Ghanaian lives must never be left vulnerable abroad.
