Samuel Nartey George, the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, has urged Ghanaians from all walks of life to rally behind the One Million Coders programme.
In a speech laced with unity and innovation at the launch of the One Million Coders Initiative, Sam George said, “Together, let us code the future of Ghana and Africa.”
The message was clear: building Ghana’s digital economy is a collective mission, and the launch of this initiative marks the start of a new era for Africa’s tech landscape.
“Your presence here, whether as policymakers, educators, industry leaders, or young innovators, proves your belief in this shared vision,” Sam George said.
According to him, the collaborative nature of the programme involves public-private partnerships with global tech leaders including MTN Group, Telecel Ghana, Google, Microsoft, and others. He said these partnerships ensure that the training provided is industry-relevant and aligned with emerging job market demands.
Sam George revealed that there is an overwhelming interest in the programme so far.
“We anticipated 260 applicants for the pilot. Within four hours, we had 4,000. Today, we have over 91,000 applications. Ghana’s youth are hungry for opportunity, and we must feed that hunger with action.”
As the government moves to scale the programme nationwide, Sam George emphasized inclusivity and sustainability.
“This is not a short-term fix,” he stated. “This is a long-term investment in our people, their talent, their potential, and their future.”
“This is not the end of something. It is the beginning. Let’s build Ghana’s tech ecosystem together, and let Africa rise; one line of code at a time,” he noted.
