Organised Labour declares nationwide strike over government inaction on galamsey

The Organised Labour has announced a nationwide strike starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, in response to the government’s failure to address the illicit mining, locally called galamsey menace.

This decision was made during an emergency meeting held today, October 1, 2024.

“The environmental destruction caused by illegal mining is a direct result of the government’s failure to act decisivel,”.the statement said.

The Union has been demanding decisive measures to combat galamsey.

Organised Labour is calling on the government to take concrete steps to halt the destructive effects of galamsey, including declaring a state of emergency in affected areas, halting mining in forest reserves, and establishing special courts to prosecute offenders.

The Union also wants the military to dismantle mining equipment in illegal sites.

The strike call, signed by Joshua Ansah, Isaac Bampoe Addo, Chairman of the Forum, and Kenneth Koomson, Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), urges all workers to stay at home until the government meets their demands.

“We are therefore, calling on all workers to stay at home starting Thursday, October 10, 2024 until government accedes to our demands,” the statement read.
