OSP seeks to revoke bail in rice scandal case over travel breach

The High Court in Accra is today expected to rule on a bail application involving one of the accused persons in the ongoing rice scandal trial, after prosecutors alleged he breached his bail conditions by attempting to leave Ghana.

The case, Republic v. Issah Seidu and three others, returned to the Criminal Division 1 of the High Court on Tuesday, where the Office of the Special Prosecutor pushed for the revocation of bail for the second accused.

According to the OSP, the accused was arrested at the Kotoka International Airport while allegedly trying to travel out of the country without prior approval, in violation of the terms of his bail.

He was intercepted by immigration officials and handed over to the anti-corruption body.

Prosecutors told the court that the alleged breach justified a reversal of his bail and asked that he be remanded in custody until the trial is concluded.

Lawyers for the accused opposed the application. They told the court their client had been travelling on official duty after being nominated by his employer to attend a seminar, and therefore had not wilfully violated his bail conditions.

The court adjourned the bail application to today, 16th April 2026, for a ruling.

In a separate development, the substantive trial has been adjourned to 15th May 2026. This is to await a decision by the Supreme Court on a legal challenge to the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s authority to prosecute the case.
