Suspended Member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Bernard Allotey Jacobs has opined that the attempt to investigate former President Mahama’s donation to delegates by the Special Prosecutor will not amount to anything significant.
Mr. Mahama has been accused of bribery and corruption over alleged reports that the former president paid over GHC 14,203, 680 to 355092 delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the party’s recently held primaries.
According to the quarters of Mr. Mahama, the intent of the money was to take care of the transportation cost of delegates who voted in the just-ended presidential and parliamentary primaries.
Despite the justification from the camp of the new flagbearer of the NDC, the Special Prosecutor’s office considers the money to have been given to influence votes in favor of Mr. Mahama.
The former President was competing for the party’s flagbearer position with two others, the former Kumasi Mayor, Kojo Bonsu and Dr. Kwabena Duffuor who later withdrew from the race.
But commenting on the development on Accra-based Peace FM on Wednesday, the former Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, Bernard Allotey Jacobs believes the investigation by the Special Prosecutor will amount to nothing.
He explained that giving monies to delegates is a normal practice and questioned how that constitutes corruption.
“The OSP probe is really much ado about nothing. It won’t amount to anything,” he said. To him, the financial donations to delegates during primaries is a “happy birthday for the delegates”.
