Sports Minister Kofi Adams has clarified the situation surrounding the salary of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, debunking reports that he has gone unpaid for the past nine months. According to Adams, Addo is owed only 50% of his annual salary, not the full amount, as previously suggested.
The confusion arose from claims that Addo had not received any salary for months, with some reports claiming he was owed the full $50,000 per month. However, Adams set the record straight during an interview on Channel One Sports, where he explained that under Addo’s contract, 50% of his annual salary was paid upfront at the start of the year. The remaining half is yet to be disbursed, making the outstanding payment only half of the total amount.
“Before I became Minister, many national team coaches, especially the expatriate coaches of the women’s national team, were paid from sponsorship funds,” Adams said. “However, we have since restructured this, and all payments now come directly from government funds, with the Finance Minister’s approval already granted.”
Adams added that the process of paying national team coaches has been streamlined to avoid future delays, and payments are made in arrears, according to the terms of the contracts. This includes the head coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, whose contract stipulates that 50% of his salary is paid in advance.
“We are committed to ensuring that all payments are made on time, and I want to reassure the public and Otto Addo that the government is doing everything necessary to meet its obligations,” Adams concluded.
