A senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof Ransford Gyampo, has rejected the idea of Founders’ Day, stating that Ghana’s history cannot be altered by force or imposition.
According to Prof Gyampo, the recognition of founders should come through consensus and dialogue, not by the whims of any regime.
He emphasized that “history cannot be altered by force and through imposition.”
Prof Gyampo argued that JB Danquah and others who thwarted the efforts at founding Ghana cannot be suddenly inserted as part of the fighters for independence.
He cited a letter authored by JB Danquah as evidence of his claims.
“We can negotiate and by consensus, insert the UGCC people somewhere as far as the founding of Ghana is concerned. Not until this is done, there’s only one founder of Ghana,” Prof Gyampo said.
He stressed that the idea of Founders’ Day can only be accepted and properly institutionalized through nationwide consensus building.
“Without consensus, what we have done to our history is temporary, as the political history of Ghana would by all means go back to its ‘factory settings’.”
Prof Gyampo concluded, “We must go back to our history! We must note that…the political history of Ghana would by all means go back to its ‘factory settings’.
