More than 10,000 Burkinabè asylum seekers have been recorded in Ghana as worsening insecurity in the West African sub-region continues to force people to flee their homes in search of safety.
The figure was disclosed during activities marking World Refugee Day in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
According to stakeholders, many of the asylum seekers are being hosted in communities across northern Ghana, including Tarikom in the Bawku West District and other settlements along the country’s northern border.
Speaking at the event, the Strategy and Integrated Programmes Director of World Vision Ghana, Roland Joshua Baidoo, highlighted the growing humanitarian challenges posed by displacement in the region and the need for continued support for affected populations.
As of May 2025, Ghana had recorded more than 10,000 Burkinabè asylum seekers who fled escalating insecurity in neighbouring Burkina Faso.
The Bawku West District is among the districts hosting a significant number of the asylum seekers. Addressing participants at the event, the District Chief Executive for Bawku West, James Ayamweogo, said the district remains committed to supporting those seeking refuge.
He noted that providing shelter and assistance to people fleeing conflict is both a humanitarian responsibility and a demonstration of Ghana’s long-standing tradition of hospitality.
World Refugee Day is observed annually to honour refugees around the world and to raise awareness about the challenges they face. The occasion also serves as a platform to advocate for greater protection and support for displaced persons.
