Overburdened courts threatening justice delivery – Chief Justice

Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkonoo has expressed concern over the overwhelming caseloads faced by many courts across the country, noting that 43 out of the 450 trial courts currently in operation have case lists exceeding 300.

She disclosed that 25 courts are handling more than 500 cases each, with 10 courts facing the staggering challenge of managing over 800 cases, some even exceeding 1,000 cases per judge.

During her remarks at the Bar Conference held at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, she emphasized the strain this situation places on judges and all stakeholders involved in the judicial process, describing it as unhealthy for the system.

She however revealed that the judicial management’s strategy is to rationalize the use of existing resources.

More judges will be deployed to assist with courts experiencing high caseloads, and the increased use of virtual courts will help expedite case handling.
