Pandemonium in Parliament was last resort to ensure transparency – Okyere Baafi

Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, has shed light on the chaotic scenes that unfolded during the Appointments Committee’s sittings on January 30 and 31.

Mr. Okyere Baafi said the Minority’s decision to disrupt the proceedings was a last resort, necessitated by concerns that certain key ministerial nominees were being vetted without sufficient transparency.

The chaos, which began as a disagreement between members of the Majority and the Minority on the Appointments Committee, quickly escalated into a violent clash, resulting in significant damage to parliamentary property.

Subsequently, a bipartisan committee was established to investigate the incident and identify those responsible.

Okyere Baafi explained that had the Minority exited the room, the Majority would have continued the vetting process unchallenged, depriving the Ghanaian public of important information about nominees, including Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

“The only way out for us was to stay and make the place ungovernable… I apologise unreservedly,” the New Juaben lawmaker stated.
