Parliament greenlights Akufo-Addo’s ministerial nominees

Parliament has approved President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s ministerial nominees, despite a walkout by the Minority caucus.

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, stated that the caucus does not support the approval of the nominees due to the country’s economic crisis, food insecurity, and reckless borrowing.

According to Ato Forson, President Akufo-Addo should be reducing the size of his government, not expanding it.

He believes MPs cannot continue to burden the taxpayer with unnecessary ministerial positions, noting that President Akufo-Addo should be looking for ways to streamline his government, not increase its size.

However, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, suspended sitting for five minutes to allow tempers to cool, and upon resumption, only the Majority was present. The Majority then voted in support of the approval of the ministerial nominees.

The approved nominees include Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye as Minister for Health, Ophelia Mensah Hayford as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and Ms. Fatimatu Abubakar as Minister for Information, among others.

The approval comes after a brief suspension due to an interlocutory injunction filed at the Supreme Court by MP for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, which has since been dismissed.
