Parliament must call for a bipartisan probe into GNPC, PETROSA deal — Kwesi Pratt

Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has called for a bipartisan probe into a claim made by the Energy Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh against Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Board Chairman, Freddy Blay.

The GNPC Board Chairman is said to have written to PetroSA offering it an equal split in the interest held by GNPC’s subsidiary Jubilee Oil Holdings Ltd.

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh is asking the Board Chairman to withdraw the offer immediately, insisting it is not in the country’s best interest.

Speaking On Metro TV’s flagship programme, Good Moring Ghana, Kwesi Pratt Jnr said he believes there is more to the story that meets the eye being told by both the Energy Minister and the GNPC Board Chairman.

Kwesi Pratt insists that Mr. Prempeh should not have lost his cool if all that the GNPC Board Chairman did was to make an offer.

“If all Mr. Blay did was to say, look, this agreement is possible but the [Energy] Minister has to approve it, why this? If all he did was to say that this agreement is possible but to consummate it, you need the approval of the Minister, why didn’t the Minister just disapprove the agreement?” Mr. Pratt quizzed on Wednesday, May 24, 2023.

The senior journalist noted that the issue must not be swept under the carpet.

“I’m sitting here and I’m wondering what is it that we don’t know. How much do we know and how much don’t we know? And I’m hoping that eventually the full facts will be disclosed so that all of us can make informed decisions about this matter,” he said.

The General Secretary of the Socialist Movement of Ghana insisted that Parliament must as a matter of urgency probe the matter for further clarification.

“A bipartisan Committee of parliament needs to go into this matter and establish the fact”
