Parliament unanimously rejects LI on Motor Traffic Regulations 2024

Members of Parliament from both sides of the House have called for the rejection of the Legislative Instrument (LI) on Motor Traffic Regulations 2024, which seeks to regulate the use of sirens by state officials.

The LI, which was laid in Parliament today, September 4, excludes the Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice, and Ministers of State from using sirens, sparking outrage among MPs.

Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo Markin, led the charge, calling on all MPs to reject the LI and demand its withdrawal to allow the Transport Minister to include the excluded officials.

Former Minority Leader and Tamale Sout MP, Haruna Iddrisu, also objected to the LI, citing the same reasons.

Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, urged MPs to be bold in demanding what is good for themselves to enable them to deliver on their mandates.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, added his voice, criticizing Parliament for being timid and allowing the Executive to use them as a rubber stamp.

He emphasized the need for Parliament to be firm in its mandate and not allow itself to be bullied by the Executive.
