Parliament’s Committee reviews Defence budget as Ministry calls for urgent helicopter purchase

Parliament’s Committee on Defence and Interior has begun examining the 2026 budget estimates of the Ministry of Defence, after the Ministry outlined its spending plans and policy priorities for the coming year.

Appearing before the Committee, the Acting Minister of Defence, Cassiel Ato Forson, said the Ministry has received a significant increase in its budget allocation compared with previous years.

He stressed that one of the most urgent needs of the Ghana Armed Forces is the acquisition of a functional helicopter, describing it as essential for operations and national security.

He appealed to the Committee to support the Ministry’s request so the purchase can be completed without delay.

Committee Chairman, James Agalga, assured the Minister of the Committee’s firm support. He noted that the defence sector remains a national priority and should receive the attention and resources necessary to strengthen the country’s security.

The Committee’s report has since been laid before the House for distribution and debate, ahead of the final approval of the 2026 budget estimates.
