Parliament’s impasse could have been resolved politically, not in court – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has said that the recent parliamentary disputes could have been settled through political dialogue rather than being taken to court.

He explains that collaborative efforts between majority and minority leaders would provide a more effective and harmonious resolution.

Addressing the clergymen in Kumasi at the Great Hall, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Monday, November 11, John Mahama said the solution to the impasse is not a legal matter as it’s currently witnessed.

According to him, a political solution between the two causes is needed rather than a Supreme Court determination as Parliament may choose not to heed to the court’s ruling because they are not under the Judiciary.

The former President underscored the need for President Akufo-Addo’s intervention, adding that if he were the President, he would have called for the case to be withdrawn from the Supreme Court.

He stated that he would have summoned the leaders of both parties, the Council of State, the Speaker, and representatives from religious bodies to find a solution to the matter.

Former President John Dramani Mahama further stated that many of the issues arising in Parliament are due to certain lapses in the constitution.

He explained that there is a need for a constitutional review, as some provisions are clear while others allow for different interpretations.

Mahama added that once these issues are addressed and clarified, there would be no need for individuals to seek court interpretations.
