The People’s National Party (PNP) has hailed the passage of the long-awaited Affirmative Action Bill into law as a “triumph for women” in Ghana.
The PNP in a statement on Tuesday, July 30, expressed gratitude to the international community, women’s advocacy groups, and political parties for their role in the bill’s passage.
“This significant milestone comes after decades of tireless advocacy by the women of Ghana, who have championed this cause since 1986,” the statement said.
The PNP commended the current Parliament for its “historic decision”, describing it as the “most progressive Parliament since the inception of our democracy”.
“We are confident that President Nana Akufo-Addo, a renowned human rights activist, will swiftly append his signature to the bill,” the statement added.
According to the PNP, the law will bring “transformative changes” to the country’s governance, allowing women to showcase their capabilities and bring “integrity, honesty, and hard work” into the system.
“‘Congratulations to all the women of Ghana! We are excited about the transformative changes this law will bring to our country’s governance,” the statement concluded.
The Affirmative Action Bill, passed on July 30, 2024, aims to ensure 40% representation of women in governmental positions, a commitment Ghana made when it ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in 1986.
