The Mindset Shift Institute Africa (MSIA) has urged philanthropic donors to provide direct support to renal patients in need, following concerns over the high treatment costs at public hospitals in Ghana.
Recently, the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital increased its treatment cost per visit from GHC380 to GHC491, causing financial strain on patients. While philanthropies have provided support to the Korle-Bu Renal Centre, MSIA’s preliminary assessment reveals that the funds may not be reaching the intended beneficiaries.
In February 2024, the Jospong Group of Companies donated almost GHc500,000 to three renal facilities in Accra, but MSIA believes the funds were not used for patient care. To ensure that donations reach those who need them most, MSIA is calling on philanthropic donors to deal directly with the renal patients who have formed an association.
“By providing direct support, we can ensure that patients receive the necessary treatment without being burdened by financial constraints,” said Kwaku Owusu Adjei, Media Contact for MSIA. “We urge all stakeholders to join us in this effort to support renal patients in Ghana.”
