The Inspector-General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno has joined officers of the Ghana Police Service in a nationwide two-day clean up exercise aimed at restoring flood affected communities and improving environmental sanitation across the country.
The exercise, which follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, forms part of a national campaign to clear debris left behind by the recent floods while helping to create cleaner, healthier and safer communities.
Police officers are working alongside residents, local authorities and other stakeholders in communities across the country to carry out extensive sanitation activities.
The exercise includes clearing refuse and flood debris, desilting choked drains, sweeping streets, brushing kerbs, removing sand and weeds from roads, fumigating affected areas, and cleaning markets, lorry parks, recreational parks and other public spaces.
The Ghana Police Service described the campaign as a shared national responsibility and urged members of the public to actively participate alongside officers to help keep communities safe, healthy and clean.
Meanwhile, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly said Friday’s activities involve the Assembly, security services, private institutions, educational institutions, waste management companies and members of the public.
On Saturday, the focus will shift to neighbourhoods, where residents, volunteer groups, security agencies and other stakeholders are expected to lead clean up activities within their communities.
The Assembly has appealed to market leaders, transport unions, business associations, religious organisations and community leaders to mobilise their members to participate fully in the exercise and comply with the temporary closure directive issued to support the campaign.
