The popular Pink Flamingo Lounge at Laboma Beach has been demolished as authorities step up efforts to clear structures built within the protected buffer zone of the Kpeshie Lagoon.
The demolition began in the early hours of Sunday, September 13, at Laboma in the La Dade-Kotopon Municipality.
Several other structures within the designated buffer area were also affected by the exercise, which is being carried out by the Post Flood Mitigation Taskforce.
Authorities say the affected properties are located within areas reserved as buffer zones for the Kpeshie Lagoon and are not permitted to remain there.
The exercise forms part of a wider directive issued on August 7 for the removal of structures found to be encroaching on waterways and their buffer zones.
The directive is part of measures aimed at tackling flooding in the Greater Accra Region while restoring natural drainage channels and protecting waterways.
The Kpeshie Lagoon has faced growing pressure from development, with structures constructed around the area raising concerns about the protection of the lagoon and its surrounding buffer zone.
The latest demolition has attracted particular attention because of the profile of some of the affected businesses, including Pink Flamingo Lounge, which has been a well-known destination along the Laboma beachfront.
