The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called on the Volta River Authority (VRA) to prioritize the welfare of residents in the area and ensure proper engagement with local authorities before the planned spillage of water from the Akosombo Dam this year.
This comes after the VRA announced in a statement a possible controlled spillage of water from the dam, which last year affected over 12,000 households in South, North, and Central Tongu, displacing residents and damaging properties.
Okudzeto Ablakwa urged the VRA to learn from last year’s mistakes and ensure better communication and transparency in their plans, including evacuation procedures in case of an emergency.
Last year’s spillage affected schools, health centers, and institutions, with many residents still living in tents and awaiting compensation.
Ablakwa’s call for proper engagement and transparency comes as the VRA prepares to begin the controlled spillage, which is expected to affect several communities in the region.
