Seven people are currently in police custody following violent clashes between the Gomoa and Effutu ethnic groups in New Winneba in the Central Region.
Three people were killed and 17 others injured during the violence, which police say was connected to a longstanding land dispute.
The injured are being treated at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba and the Winneba Municipal Hospital, according to the Central Regional Police Command.
The violence broke out on Tuesday, September 1, after a group of about 300 people allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks entered the New Winneba Township.
Police said the group, believed to have come from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, arrived in the community at about 10:40 a.m. and attacked residents.
Shops, stores and other properties belonging to residents were also allegedly vandalised during the confrontation.
The Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were subsequently deployed to bring the situation under control and prevent the violence from spreading.
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has since ordered additional reinforcement from the National Police Headquarters.
Two armoured vehicles are among the resources deployed to support the security operation in the area.
The Police Service says calm has now been restored, but personnel remain on the ground to prevent further disturbances and maintain security in the affected communities.
