Police in the Western North Region have arrested the matron and a cook of Awaso STEM Senior High School after food supplies meant for students were allegedly diverted to a private residence.
The Sehwi Bekwai Police Command picked up the suspects, identified as Nyamadi Benedicta and a cook at the school, following intelligence that large quantities of school food had been moved to a house at Atronsu in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality.
Officers who acted on the tip-off recovered 21 bags of rice, six gallons of cooking oil, 40 tins of tomatoes, four boxes of milk, a bag of sugar, as well as quantities of maize, millet and gari, among other items.
Municipal Chief Executive for Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, Sebastian Obeng, confirmed the arrests, saying his office alerted the police after the supplies were traced to the private home.
According to him, the swift police action led to the arrest of those involved and the recovery of the items, which were intended for students of the school.
Mr Obeng also issued a warning to school authorities across the municipality, cautioning that anyone found diverting food meant for students would face firm action.
