Police have arrested convicted fraudster Eric Afoakwa, also known as Chad, while he was allegedly preparing to leave the country, bringing to an end years of efforts to track him down after he went into hiding following his conviction.
The Ghana Police Service said Afoakwa was arrested on 6th July 2026 by officers from the Anti Armed Robbery Unit acting on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police.
Afoakwa was convicted in absentia by the Accra High Court in 2019 on charges of money laundering, defrauding by false pretences, forgery of official documents and tax evasion. He was found guilty on five of the six charges brought against him.
The court, presided over by Justice Georgina Mensah Datsa, sentenced him to eight years in prison, with the sentences to run concurrently. He was also ordered to refund $132,660 to the complainant.
Following the judgment, Afoakwa went into hiding and was declared wanted by the Economic and Organised Crime Office, which appealed to the public for information on his whereabouts.
Police said he will now be handed over to the Economic and Organised Crime Office to continue the enforcement of the court’s judgment.
The Ghana Police Service said it will continue to work closely with relevant state agencies to ensure that fugitives from justice are arrested and made to face the full rigours of the law.
