Police arrest six over suspected armed robbery syndicate in Ashanti Region

Police in Ashanti Region have arrested six people suspected of belonging to an organised armed robbery syndicate linked to a number of reported street robberies in and around Kumasi.

The arrests were made in August by officers from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit in Kumasi following intelligence-led operations, the Ashanti Regional Police Command said.

The suspects have been identified as Philip Nyarko, also known as “Kawawa”; Hadi Samed, alias “Toronto”; Issahaku Musah, alias “Isak”; Suraj Mohammed, also known as “Baba Nde” and “Trouble”; Hadi Abdul Majeed, alias “Panie”; and Foster Owusu Afriyie, alias “Joe Fraizer”.

According to police, preliminary investigations have linked the suspects to reported street robbery incidents in areas including Kaase, Ahinsan Estate, Santasi New Site, Bronikrom and Kwadaso Estate.

Police said they recovered two motorcycles, two machetes, knives, an iPhone 13, five keypad mobile phones, a laptop and 33 assorted mobile phones during the investigation.

The items are believed by investigators to be connected to the alleged criminal activities, although investigations are continuing to establish their exact origins and the full extent of the suspects’ involvement.

Police also arrested Augustine Agyemang Duah, who is suspected of helping members of the group unlock mobile phones believed to have been stolen.

The latest arrests come months after some of the suspects had previously been arrested in a separate robbery case.

Police said Philip Nyarko, Hadi Samed and a man identified as Abdul Shattar were arrested on 6 December 2025 on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery and attempted robbery.

They were subsequently put before the Asokwa Circuit Court 1 and granted bail. That case is still before the court, according to police.

Investigators now allege that some of the suspects resumed criminal activities after their release.

Abdul Shattar, who police say is also linked to the earlier case, is currently wanted.

Police are also looking for five other people identified as Andy, Umaru, Dauda, Malik and Abdul Farouk, who they suspect may have links to the alleged syndicate.

The Regional Police Command has appealed to anyone with information about the whereabouts of the wanted persons to contact the police.

It warned members of the public not to confront or attempt to arrest any of the suspects themselves.

Investigations are continuing as police seek to determine whether other people were involved and to recover more property believed to have been stolen.

The six arrested suspects are expected to be processed for court in accordance with Ghanaian law.

Police have also asked people who may have lost mobile phones or other property during robbery incidents to contact the command so that they can help identify items recovered during the investigation.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command said it would continue to use intelligence-led operations to target violent crime and protect residents and their property.

It also acknowledged the support of the Inspector General of Police’s Special Operations Team in the investigation and arrests.

The statement was signed by Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, head of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit.
