Police arrest suspects after Berekum Chelsea player killed in robbery

Dominic Frimpong

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a highway robbery that left a young footballer dead, police say.

Officers say the alleged gang leader and another suspect were picked up following an intelligence-led operation. One of them was injured during an exchange of fire with police and is receiving treatment in hospital.

The arrests come after the killing of 20-year-old Berekum Chelsea forward Dominic Frimpong, who died after being shot during an ambush on the team bus.

The attack happened as the team travelled back from a Ghana Premier League match against FC Samartex.

Armed men blocked the Bibiani-Goaso road near Ahyiresu, forcing the vehicle to stop.

Players and officials fled into nearby bushes to escape as gunmen targeted the bus. Several people were injured in the chaos.

Frimpong was shot in the head and rushed to Bibiani Government Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police say investigations are ongoing as they work to identify and arrest other members of the group.
