Police in the Bono East Region have returned GH₵85,000 in cash to a Kumasi businessman after officers found the money in a bag lying by the roadside along the Techiman Kumasi highway.
The cash was discovered in the early hours of February 14, 2026, at about 4:20 am, during routine duties at a snap check point on the busy stretch.
Officers on duty noticed a bag by the roadside, believed to have fallen from a moving vehicle. The bag had the name Ofori and a phone number boldly written on it.
Inspector George Appiah, who led the team with three other officers, retrieved the bag and upon inspection realised it contained a substantial amount of money. The officers forwarded it to the Regional Command for further checks and investigation.
Using the phone number written on the bag, police contacted a 53-year-old businessman from Ashtown in Kumasi, Stephen Ofori, who confirmed ownership. He later reported to the police to claim the bag.
Mr Ofori explained that the ₵85,000 had been withdrawn from GCB Bank in Wa and was being transported to Kumasi in a commercial vehicle when it apparently fell off during the journey.
The money was counted and verified in his presence and confirmed to be ₵85,000. After further checks and a satisfactory explanation, the police handed the full amount back to him.
The Bono East Regional Police Command commended the officers involved for their honesty and professionalism, as well as members of the public who assisted in drawing attention to the abandoned bag.
