The Ghana Police Service has initiated an investigation into the alleged assault of Joy FM journalist Latif Iddrisu during the arrest of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, at the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) premises in Accra on Tuesday, May 27.
Latif Iddrisu was delivering a live report from the premises of EOCO when he was allegedly assaulted by individuals believed to be supporters of Wontumi and by extension the New Patriotic Party, who had gathered to show solidarity.
He was allegedly struck on the head by some of the attackers, with others reportedly using a stone and a rubber band as weapons.
In a statement available to Metro TV, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command announced that a formal investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, said the police are reviewing all available evidence, including video recordings and eyewitness testimonies, to establish the facts of the case and identify any individuals responsible.
“The Ghana Police Service reaffirms its commitment to upholding the rights of all individuals, including members of the media, and ensuring that the rule of law is maintained throughout our operations,” Supt. Obeng stated.
Meanwhile, the Multimedia Group Limited, the parent company of Joy FM, has strongly condemned the alleged assault on journalist Latif Iddrisu during the arrest of Chairman Wontumi at the EOCO premises.
The company in a statement described the assault as “unacceptable” and demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.
“This assault on a journalist in the line of duty is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms,” the statement read.
