The Ghana Police Service has called on the public to join a nationwide two-day clean up exercise aimed at restoring flood affected communities and improving sanitation across the country.
The exercise follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama as part of a national campaign to clear debris left behind by the recent floods and promote cleaner and safer communities.
Police officers will work alongside residents and other stakeholders in communities across the country to carry out a range of sanitation activities.
These include clearing refuse and flood debris, desilting choked drains, sweeping streets, brushing kerbs, removing sand and weeds from roads, fumigating affected areas, and cleaning markets, lorry parks, recreational parks and other public spaces.
The Ghana Police Service urged the public to join officers in the exercise, saying the campaign is a shared responsibility to keep communities safe, healthy and clean.
Meanwhile, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly said Friday’s activities will involve the Assembly, security services, private institutions, educational institutions, waste management companies and members of the public.
Saturday’s exercise will shift its focus to neighbourhoods, with residents, volunteer groups, security agencies and other stakeholders expected to lead clean up activities within their communities.
The Assembly has appealed to market leaders, transport unions, business associations, religious organisations and community leaders to mobilise their members to participate fully in the exercise and comply with the temporary closure directive issued for the campaign.
