Police have arrested twelve people for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities that led to the destruction of part of the Takoradi–Nsuta railway line in the Western Region.
The suspects, all residents of Akyem, were picked up after a viral video showed extensive mining operations dangerously close to the railway tracks. The footage also captured an assault on a staff member of the Ghana Railway Company who had attempted to stop the activity.
The suspects have been identified as Denis Adom, Alex Kofi Acquah, Kwame Simon, Isaac Arhin, Larry Koku, Lambon Moysi, Ali Asoma, Nurudeen Kobina, Jude Azumah, Yendari Bonber, Jonathan Ayandor, and Daniel Combat.
Police say the group has been charged with conspiracy to commit crime, undertaking mining operations without a license, and causing unlawful damage. They are currently in custody and are expected to appear before court on October 7, 2025.
The Takoradi–Nsuta railway line is a key route used to transport manganese and other goods between the Western Region and Takoradi Port. Authorities have described the illegal mining near the line as a serious threat to safety and infrastructure, and have vowed to clamp down on similar activities across the region.
