The CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has criticized the country’s political landscape, accusing politicians of being driven by self-interest rather than genuine concern for the nation.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, June 7, Prof. Gyampo lamented that politics in Ghana is often characterized by “politics of convenience” led by insincere individuals who prioritize personal gain over national interests.
He questioned the selective outrage among politicians, pointing to the recent demonstrations by the Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by Alexander Afenyo Markin, demanding the release of NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who is facing fraud charges.
What really irks Prof. Gyampo is the apparent double standard, asking, “Otherwise why demonstrate for Wontumi and be silent about Ken Ofori Atta?”
Ken Ofori-Atta, the former Finance Minister, is currently on International Police Organization (INTERPOL) Red Alert list for alleged corruption.
On Interpol’s official website, Ofori-Atta is listed as “Wanted” for allegedly using his public office for profit.
This development follows a declaration by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which had re-designated Ofori-Atta as wanted after he failed to appear for a scheduled interrogation on June 2.
The OSP had initiated steps to place Ofori-Atta on an Interpol Red Notice, with extradition proceedings underway to facilitate his return to Ghana. Ofori-Atta is under investigation for his alleged involvement in several high-profile cases, including irregularities in contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) over petroleum and minerals revenue assurance.
Additionally, he faces allegations related to the unlawful termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC), as well as irregularities in procurement procedures and financial transactions related to the construction of the National Cathedral.
Furthermore, Ofori-Atta is also being investigated for suspected corruption in a Ministry of Health contract with Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the purchase and maintenance of ambulances, and mismanagement of funds from the GRA’s Tax P-Fund Account.
The Red Notice enables international law enforcement cooperation to track and apprehend Ofori-Atta.
