Poor 2025 WASSCE results show systemic failures – Shamima Muslim

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim says the disappointing 2025 WASSCE results should be seen as a wake-up call as the country confronts long-standing challenges in its education system.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana with host, Moro Awudu, she said the poor performance was not just about weak math scores, but a sign of deeper literacy gaps that have followed students through the system.

She explained that mathematics depends heavily on comprehension, and the results show that many students are struggling with basic reading and understanding.

According to her, this year’s outcome “is just a manifestation of a bigger problem” that the government must confront directly.

Muslim described the results as a “baseline” for the new administration, saying President John Dramani Mahama’s first year offers an opportunity to diagnose the root causes of the decline.

She noted that issues flagged at the National Education Dialogue earlier this year match what the WASSCE results now reflect.

“This is the same schools, the same teachers, the same curriculum and the same subjects,” she said, adding that the consistency of the environment makes the scale of the failure even more telling.

She said the government intends to use the findings to guide reforms focused on literacy, reading competency and broader structural improvements aimed at improving learning outcomes.
