Power and Water go up, but wages don’t – Kow Essuman blasts Mahama over tariff  hike

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and private legal practitioner, Kow Essuman, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government following recent utility tariff hikes announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) page, Essuman accused the Mahama-led administration of implementing policies that worsen the economic hardships of ordinary Ghanaians, describing the tariff increment as a betrayal of public trust.

“This NDC government gives with one hand but takes away with both hands. No mercy… please budget accordingly,” he wrote.

His comments came in response to the PURC’s announcement, dated April 11, which confirmed a 14.75% increase in electricity tariffs and a 4.02% rise in water tariffs. According to the Commission, the review was part of its quarterly adjustment process for the first and second quarters of 2025.

While the government has implemented a 10% salary increase for public sector workers, Essuman highlighted that utility prices have surged by 4.75% more than the salary adjustment — a disparity he believes underscores poor economic management.

“Public sector salary increase: 10%, Utility price increase: 14.75%. Utility prices have risen by 4.75% more than the increase in public sector salaries. Moreover, the salary increments have not yet been reflected in the wages of public sector employees,” Essuman noted.

The tariff hikes have already begun to stir public discontent, especially among labour unions and civil society groups, who argue that the rising cost of living is outpacing earnings. Critics say the move further squeezes households already grappling with inflation and stagnant wages.

As the debate intensifies, the PURC has urged consumers to understand the necessity of the adjustments, citing sustainability in service delivery as a driving factor.
