The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has commended President John Mahama for his bold move in promoting ethical leadership and accountability in public office.
The party particularly applauded the President’s decision to declare and transfer gifted vehicles to the state, describing it as a “personal act of transparency that sets an important precedent.”
“The President’s decision to declare and transfer gifted vehicles to the state exemplifies the values of humility, responsibility, and integrity that we expect from our nation’s highest office,” the PPP stated in a press release.
However, the party expressed reservations about the extended deadline for asset declaration, initially set for March 31, 2025, and later pushed to May 7, 2025.
“Granting an extension may inadvertently reduce the seriousness of the directive and weaken its enforcement,” the PPP noted.
The PPP has long advocated for greater transparency in asset declarations by public officials. The party is pushing for an amendment to Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution to allow public access to asset declarations without the need for a court order or formal inquiry.
“We propose that this article be amended to allow access to such declarations by the public or under the Right to Information Act,” the party stated.
The PPP welcomed the proposed public reporting portal for suspected breaches of the Code of Conduct, encouraging Ghanaians to utilize this platform to ensure public servants remain accountable.
“President Mahama’s recent actions represent a meaningful step toward restoring ethical standards in public life,” the PPP said.
“However, without deeper legal reforms, particularly those that promote transparency and public access to asset declarations, our fight against corruption will remain incomplete.”
