President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his government’s commitment to resolving the long-standing conflict in Bawku, a region in northern Ghana that has experienced persistent instability.
Speaking at the Zug-raan Palace in Bawku on Tuesday, January 14, President Mahama addressed the Bawku Naba and Chiefs from the KUSAAUG traditional area, calling for unity, restraint, and cooperation from all stakeholders in the pursuit of lasting peace and development.
“This is a peace-building mission, and I will also visit Nalerigu to share the same message,” President Mahama said, emphasizing the need for collective action across the region.
As part of his administration’s immediate response to the situation, President Mahama announced plans to strengthen the country’s security leadership.
He revealed that key appointments, including Ministers for Defense, Interior, National Security Adviser, National Security Coordinator, and Director of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), would be made by the end of the week.
“We are putting in place the necessary appointments so that we can have ministers and other officials who are responsible for security within this week,” President Mahama confirmed.
He emphasized that resolving the Bawku conflict will be a top priority for these newly appointed officials.
“When these appointments are made, I am going to charge them to make Bawku one of their number one priorities,” he added.
The President’s visit to Bawku is part of a broader strategy aimed at fostering dialogue and collaboration among all parties involved in the conflict.
The Bawku crisis, which has persisted for decades, remains one of Ghana’s most challenging security issues, requiring both political will and concerted efforts from all levels of society to bring about lasting peace.
President Mahama called for unity and a collective commitment to dialogue, framing these as essential building blocks for peace in Bawku and other conflict-prone areas across the nation.
“We must come together, set aside differences, and focus on what unites us for the sake of peace,” he stated.
The President’s message to the Chiefs and people of Bawku was clear: cooperation, patience, and a steadfast commitment to dialogue are essential for resolving the conflict and achieving long-term stability.
He reiterated that his administration is dedicated to supporting peace-building initiatives and ensuring that lasting peace prevails in the region.
The Bawku conflict, which has had far-reaching implications for local communities and the broader security landscape, remains a priority for the Mahama administration. Through these efforts and appointments, the President aims to create an environment conducive to dialogue, reduce tensions, and pave the way for socio-economic development in the region.
As Ghana continues to face security challenges in various parts of the country, President Mahama’s visit to Bawku is a timely reminder of the importance of peace, unity, and effective governance in securing a stable future for all Ghanaians.
The President’s visit underscores his administration’s commitment to addressing Ghana’s security challenges with a focus on collaboration, dialogue, and a multi-faceted approach to conflict resolution.
