Prestea Huni Valley MP slams military’s role in FGR Mine workers’ dismissal

The Member of Parliament for Prestea Huni Valley Constituency, Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, has strongly condemned the deployment of military personnel to the Future Global Resource (FGR) mine to dismiss workers without prior formal communication or clear reasons.

Robert Cudjoe in a statement described the development as “deeply disturbing”.

“I hereby condemn this unlawful action in the strongest possible terms,” he said.

According to him, the use of military personnel to regulate access to the mining site and determine who may retain their employment status undermines the Labour Act of 2003 (Act 651), Section 57(2), which outlines procedures for contract termination.

Robert Wisdom Cudjoe questioned the involvement of the military in employment matters.

“Under which labour statutes is it permissible for military personnel to engage in actions that directly affect employment contracts?” he wondered.

He demanded immediate clarification from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR) and the Minerals Commission on the criteria used for selecting workers to be dismissed, whether the dismissals are redundancies or outright terminations, the terms and conditions of the dismissal, and the justification for the military’s presence.

The Prestea Huni Valley MP also called on stakeholders to prioritize the livelihoods of constituents, job security, and the sustainability of the FGR mine.
