President John Dramani Mahama has backed a major overhaul of Ghana’s prison system, saying the country must rethink how it treats both inmates and officers.
“Prison is not a place to wish your enemy,” he said as he met members of the Ghana Prisons Service Council at Jubilee House.
The delegation, led by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, briefed the president on the state of prisons and the urgent need for reform.
Mr Mahama said the government would act on the concerns raised, with a focus on improving living and working conditions across the service.
He also endorsed the “Think Prison Think 360” agenda, a plan that seeks a broad approach to reform. The initiative focuses on rehabilitation, staff welfare and preparing inmates for reintegration into society.
The council said the current system faces significant challenges and requires coordinated action to deliver lasting change.
Those present at the meeting included Council Chairman Alexander Nana Yaw Kumi Larbi and Director General of Prisons Patience Baffoe Bonnie.
The president’s comments signal renewed political backing for prison reform, with officials hopeful the new approach will bring long overdue improvements to the system.
