‘Promise keeper’ Mahama will deliver tuition-free university education for first-year students – Brogya Genfi

Deputy Director of Special Duties for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Brogya Genfi, has emphasized former President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to fulfilling his promises, citing his track record of keeping commitments.

Sitting with Dr. Randy Abbey on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Brogya Genfi explained that John Mahama’s pledge to provide free admission to first-year tertiary students is feasible, building on the student loan plus initiative introduced in 2015/2016.

“‘Remember, this policy of no fee stress is linked to something that was done under President Mahama when he was in office…the student loan plus, which was introduced for fresh students who got admission but couldn’t pay the fees,'” he said.

According to him, the NDC is being consistent in its progressive approach to introducing free education, starting with day students, just like they did with free SHS.

“‘The cost of hostel fees and all that is a burden on parents…I know that parents even struggle to pay for hostel fees, and their concerns may not mainly be on the academic user fees,'” Brogya Genfi acknowledged.

To address accommodation challenges, John Mahama proposes partnering with the private sector to design and regulate hostel fees, ensuring they match up with existing university hostels.

“‘President Mahama is saying that we are going to partner with the private sector, have a model design for hostels…give lands that belong to tertiary institutions to the private sector, have a partnership, and regulate the fees that we charge…'” Brogya Genfi explained.
