Public office is a privilege, not a status symbol – Tempane MP

The Minister of State for Public Sector Reforms and Member of Parliament for Tempane Constituency, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, has rejected claims that her role in the ruling NDC government should be driven by pride or excitement.

Speaking in an interview on Good Afternoon Ghana on Metro TV on Thursday, April 16, 2026, she described her appointment as a humbling opportunity to serve rather than a position of prestige.

“It’s a humbling position and a privilege to serve the people because the opportunity wasn’t handed to me on a silver platter,” she said.

Madam Akanvariba emphasized that engaging stakeholders and earning the mandate of the people is a demanding responsibility that requires commitment and diligence.

She also used the platform to encourage young women aspiring to enter public service to remain determined, stressing that success should not be based on gender considerations but on self-improvement and capacity building.

“Sometimes the people of my community doubt my educational background because I blend in easily with them through my dressing. I wear their outfits to connect with them,” she noted.

Madam Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba commended the President for promoting gender inclusivity in his administration.

On whether she anticipated her appointment, she admitted having mixed feelings but expressed confidence in her preparedness, citing her experience in public service.

“Working for 14 years as a nurse and serving as a NADMO Director equipped me with the knowledge needed for public service,” she added.
